The Etzanoa Discovery

In 2015, when I was 15, I joined an archaeological survey near Arkansas City, Kansas, on land where my grandmother lived. Using a metal detector, I found a half-inch iron ball buried four inches deep. It turned out to be Spanish cannon shot from a 1601 battle between conquistadors and Native American warriors. That little ball was the evidence Dr. Donald Blakeslee of Wichita State University needed to confirm the location of Etzanoa, a lost Wichita city of roughly 20,000 people. It's believed to be the second-largest Native American settlement ever found in the United States.

The discovery made national and international news. In 2017, the Kansas House of Representatives adopted House Resolution 6028 honoring the effort, and I was recognized on the House floor alongside Dr. Blakeslee.
